“The concept is accentuated by the physical cues that cause motorists to proceed carefully through streets that serve purposes broader than vehicular m”

The shared space concept for Kingsland arterial road is a vision of how the public realm could look when the new Auckland City hosts the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The most recognisable characteristic of shared space is the absence of street clutter, such as conventional traffic signals, barriers, signs and road markings. The concept is accentuated by the physical cues that cause motorists to proceed carefully through streets that serve purposes broader than vehicular movement.

This encourages motorists to slow down, engage with their surroundings and make eye contact with pedestrians – resulting in a higher quality and more usable street area, with enhanced road safety.

The design and layout of the street is radically different from automobile oriented thoroughfares, signaling visually to drivers and pedestrians that this zone, district, block, square etc. is a place where the rules of the road are different, and passage through the zone takes on a different speed
